Wind Load: Why the South Plains Is Hard on Garage Doors
Most garage door advice assumes wind is an occasional event. On the Llano Estacado it is a season, and it changes what a door needs to be.
Why the door is the weak point
A double garage door is around a hundred and twelve square feet of flat surface with almost no depth to it. It is the largest single opening in the building envelope and it is held in place by track and rollers rather than by a frame. Sustained wind loads it like a sail, and gusts load it unevenly.
What sustained loading actually does
Long before anything dramatic happens, the door flexes. That flexing spreads the track at the top, wears roller stems on one side, and works fixings loose in the jamb. Owners notice a noisier door and a door that shudders, and read it as wear rather than as wind.
The failure that matters
If a door gives way in a high-wind event, the building is suddenly pressurised from inside and that load transfers to the roof structure. This is why wind-rated doors and reinforcement struts exist, and it is a genuinely different consideration from cosmetic durability.
What to look for
Visible inward flex on a windy day. Track that is no longer parallel at the top. Roller stems worn on one face. Fixings that have opened up the timber around them. Any of those means the door is already taking more load than it is comfortable with.
What can be done
Reinforcement struts across the sections, heavier gauge sections, and a properly specified wind-rated door on replacement. The specification decision happens at order time and cannot be added cheaply afterwards, which is the practical reason to raise it early.
