Garage Door Emergencies in Lubbock: What to Do First
Most garage door emergencies get worse because of what happens immediately after they start.
A spring has broken
You will have heard a bang, and the door will be far too heavy to lift. Do not use the opener - it is not built to lift an unsprung door and you will strip the gear or bend the top section. Leave the door where it is. If your vehicle is inside, it stays inside until someone comes.
The door is off track
Stop immediately and do not run the opener to reseat it. In the alley-served older neighbourhoods, forcing an off-track door bends narrow original track and tears anchoring out of dried timber jambs, which turns a repair into a replacement.
The door came off in wind
Do not attempt to reseat it, and keep people away from it. A door that has failed under wind load usually has bent track and possibly a damaged section, and the springs may be holding tension against a distorted assembly. Photograph it where it stands and leave it.
The door is stuck open in a dust event
Get it closed if the springs are intact - the manual release lets you lower it by hand. An open garage during a haboob fills with fine sand that then has to be cleaned out of everything in it, including the door hardware.
